Are you looking to dive deeper into the world of Lindy Hop? Do you like the idea of learning a routine and performing in front of a crowd? Are you interested in hanging out and practicing with people who are as obsessed with dancing as you are? Side Street Swing’s teams just might be the place for you!
Side Street’s teams hold open auditions annually in September. Other auditions are occasionally held at the discretion of the coaches.
Current team members can pay dues here. **Please note that simply paying dues does not make you a member of the team - all team members must audition before joining.**
We have several teams which cover a wide range of levels and goals, from entry-level to semi-pro. Some teams are competitive, some teams are performance oriented, and some focus on improving your dancing just for the sake of getting better! All the teams are lots of fun, and are coached by some of the city’s best Lindy Hoppers. Below you can learn more about each of our teams, and see if one of them might be right for you!
Wednesdays, 8:30 - 10:00
Coached by: Erik Morris and Teghan Godkin
Monthly Dues: $70 regular, $55 student
Welcome to the Lamplighters, our entry-level couples choreography team! If you're curious as to what being on a team is all about, this is the place for you!
On this team, dancers work with a partner to learn an original choreography and perform it in the December and Spring showcases. If they're so inclined, team members may also decide to compete in the team division at O-Town Showdown in March!
This team will involve light acrobatics, and focuses on improving your dancing, getting creative, and having fun. This team is perfect for intermediate dancers who have done the full swing series or the Lindy Lab and are looking for more!
Gig Crew (Repertoire)
Sundays, 3:00 - 4:30
Coached by: Laura Smith
Monthly Dues: $55 regular, $45 student. $25 when combined with any other SSS team.
Welcome to Gig Crew, Side Street Swing's semi-professional performance troupe! This group of fun, motivated, and energetic dancers focuses on learning and maintaining a diverse repertoire of performance pieces, with the goal of performing as much as possible!
This team is focused on learning choreography, doing shows (sometimes paid!) and working on skills relevant to performance such as presentation, improvisation, and acrobatics. If you love to perform for crowds, like to learn new routines, and are comfortable on stage, we encourage you to audition for the team!
Dancers on this team must have completed the swing series including Swing 4 / Lindy Lab or equivalent, should be familiar with multiple swing styles including 20's and 30's Charleston, and should be actively working on their dancing. This team is physically demanding, and includes fast routines and acrobatics. Prior team experience is a definite asset!
Gig Crew is available to perform at special events and parties, and has performed all over the city of Ottawa at festivals, fundraisers, and other occasions. The group can provide dance demos and "fill the floor" services, as well as choreographed routines depending on dancer availability.
Side Street Productions
Sundays, 4:30 - 6:00 (subject to change as needed)
Coached by: Laura Smith
Side Street Productions is the school's professional level performance troupe. This group is available to perform at galas, parties, and corporate events, and always puts on a great show! We are also happy to provide dance instruction to your guests, so that everyone can join in the fun!
Whatever your event, Side Street will provide polished, professional dancers to keep the crowd entertained and the dance floor hopping! The music is fast, the acrobatics are high, and the energy is even higher!
SSP can provide custom choreography for your event on the song of your choice, or draw from our extensive repertoire of routines and sequences. If you would like to hire SSP for your event, please contact side street swing @ gmail.com.
Think you have what it takes to join SSP? Contact Laura if you would like to be considered for an audition!
The Hitchhikers (resumes 2020)
Sundays, 6:30 - 8:00 pm.
Coached by: Kalyn Jobb
Monthly Dues: $65 regular, $50 student
This is the perfect place to polish your solo dancing! This entry-level solo team focuses on improving your movement and expanding your vocabulary of solo moves. The team is non-competitive, but does perform in the Christmas and Spring shows!
This team is great for dancers who have taken our intro to solo jazz or solo Charleston classes, who love to bust out their solo dancing at social dances and wish they knew more, or who enjoy dancing the Shim Sham and are interested in learning other solo choreographies.
The Firebrands (resumes 2020)
Thursdays, 6:00 - 8:00, at Arts Court
